Bag End’s IDS12-I subwoofer — small but mighty

July 3rd, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Speakers, Others
Bag End is one of those brands that’s fairly well known in pro circles, but almost unheard of by general consumers. The no-frills enclosures would definitely be a hard sell in most domiciles — unless you live in the Bat Cave or something — but the bass performance is nothing to sneeze at. The latest IDS12-I mates a 12-inch INFRA cone to a 220-Watt onboard amp to deliver flat response all the way down to 18Hz. Pretty impressive for a little 15×18×15-inch box, and more than enough to rock the Shire, eh? Just make sure you’ve got XLR cabling or at least an adapter — balanced inputs only need apply.

Take a tour through Panasonic’s CRT & flat panel TV recycling center

July 3rd, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Displays, Panasonic, CRT, LCD, Plasma
Less remarked upon in our CES 2009 coverage was the green factor consistently mentioned in many presentations, with various manufacturers promising more responsible production facilities, and plans to offer recycling for all the old televisions that will be replaced in the years to come. Courtesy of AV Watch and Google Translate, we can take a tour through one of Panasonic’s recycling facilities, where the latest breakthrough uses a laser beam to separate the front and rear glass of CRTs, allowing for three times faster processing. If there’s anything better than machine translation, old TVs headed for certain doom, and lasers, we have no idea what it is.

UK Blu-ray sales up 231% over last year

July 3rd, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Blu-ray

The British Video Association is back with some more happy stats on how well Blu-ray is doing, claiming 3.1 million discs sold since the start of 2009. Still, even with a claimed 231% jump over last year’s YTD figures, that hasn’t offset a 9.5% drop in sales of DVDs. that should move the needle well past last year’s figures, where only 1.5 million were reportedly moved by October, but we doubt that’s much comfort to employees of the nearly 900 retailers that have closed this year. Even with consumers “continuing to spend money on the product” once they’ve experienced it, according to BVA director general Lavinia Carey, expect a greater focus on downloads to offer an alternative to piracy, though no word on when that can be expected.

Netflix Plans for the Future

July 3rd, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Reed Hastings has seen the future, and there are no polycarbonate discs in his vision. You might find this surprising, given that he’s the CEO of Netflix. Is there life for Netflix after the DVD? That’s the question that was explored in an article in the Wall Street Journal last month.
Hastings co-founded Netflix, and expects that revenue from the rental of physical DVD discs will start to decline in as little as four years from now. Faced with a certain end to the business that now generates the bulk of the company’s revenues, he has the opportunity to set a new course for Netflix, and he’s working hard at it.
Clearly, the answer is to replace sending physical discs through the US Postal Service with streaming electronic versions of the movies across the Internet. (What will the Post Office do without those half-billion DVDs to deliver each year?) The company is […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

Last iPhone Thoughts (For Now)

July 2nd, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: * I’ve discovered that you really have to whip that thing around on its side to activate the accelerometer enough to change the screen’s orientation. Also, it only works if you’re holding the phone in your hands, and not laying it flat on a desk or table.
* Tilting sideways isn’t universal.
* Wi-Fi is about 5x faster than 3G.  And don’t get me started on the pain that is Edge. The Speed Test app is worth the free download just to teach yourself that little fact.  I tend to keep Wi Fi off unless I’m at home, just to keep the phone from searching for a Wi Fi signal and draining its battery.  In the car, I use the ear bud that came with the phone instead of the Bluetooth earpiece.  And I don’t leave location search on until I need it.
* I wish I could subscribe to a podcast through […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb
