In what was by far the largest contest to date in terms of both entrants and designs submitted, Bonic’s simple design incorporating a sketched folder (indicating thumbnail sketches that are part of the design process) has been declared the winning logo that will be used to shape the identity of 99designs.

Sony’s 25-Megapixel Full-Frame Sensor Lands in Massive Sony DSLR [Sony Flagship Dslr]

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Sony’s 25-Megapixel Full-Frame Sensor Lands in Massive Sony DSLR [Sony Flagship Dslr]
This is something of a surprise. We sorta didn’t expect Sony’s 25-megapixel full-frame serious pro sensor to land in a Sony DSLR. The cam’s details are scant as hell—it doesn’t even have a name, just “flagship model system.” All we could squeeze out of recalcitrant reps, other than what we already know about that sweet sensor, is that it’s definitely an ‘08 release and has a 3.5-inch LCD that’s got at least a megapixel of resolution (the a700’s screen was name-checked), plus it has built-in image stabilization. Since it’s so prelim, no other specs, price or more definitive release date. Looks like the D3 and EOS-1Ds Mark III might have some new competition. galleryPost(\\’sonyflagship\\’, 6, \\’\\’);

90% Of United States Is Pirating DS Games? [Piracy]

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: 90% Of United States Is Pirating DS Games? [Piracy]
John Hillier is the manager of the UK-based The Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association’s Intellectual Property Crime unit. And he just made one hell of a claim about the American piracy market for the Nintendo DS.
In America it’s thought 90 percent of Nintendo DS users are playing pirated games because of R4s…takings from Nintendo DS games in the US are lower than any other console…

Seriously? Is this guy for real? Because we can’t believe that 90% of DS owners have even heard of the R4.

Show GCal Events on Google Maps [Mashups]

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Show GCal Events on Google Maps [Mashups]
Blogger Tony Hirst spent a few minutes mixing the RSS and KML feeds from Google’s Calendar and Maps functions and, with the help of Yahoo Pipes, came up with a fantastic mashup: Mapped Google Calendar events. That means, for example, opening your customized map to see that you’ve got grocery shopping and a post office stop in one part of town, so you might want to seek out an ATM near there to avoid excess driving. The mashup requires a little Pipes work, and also a public GCal feed, but once you’ve got it working, you can then add your GCal items to “My Maps” or even embed them on your own start page. In short, people like our reader Mike might have a great solution for getting directions and coordinate timing for their schedules.

Fireplace Heater Looks, Feels Just Like the Real Thing [Gadgets]

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Fireplace Heater Looks, Feels Just Like the Real Thing [Gadgets]
Leave it to the Japanese to create a heater that’s as ingenius as this. It may look like a cross between an LCD display and a space heater, but the display part of the gadget actually shows a “real” fireplace. The end result is that you get to imagine that your (really tiny) Japanese apartment has a fireplace in it while you’re warming up your fingers and toes during the long Kyoto winters. Too bad it’s 25,800 yen ($242) or we’d import one for ourselves. [Hammer Price via DVICE]

In previous posts, I’m covered some of the updates to Rails 2.0 and how to prepare for Rails 2.0 but haven’t really covered the mechanics of HOW to upgrade to Rails 2.0. So as part of the 6 things to try in Rails this year series, I have compiled a quick recipe that works for me. It probably isn’t the only method, but it works.
1. Fix all of the deprecated warnings

Skloib’s White Box Cube Is Secret Living-Room Transformer [Home Automation]

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Skloib’s White Box Cube Is Secret Living-Room Transformer [Home Automation]
This is what my future home will look like: clean, simple, white— like a doctor’s office, you might think. But when I turn a nondescript “white box cube,” all sorts of crap starts happening: what you thought was my painting is now my TV, a planter starts emitting colored mood-light, music spews from a mural on the wall and screens embedded in the cabinets spring to life. What Austrian furniture designer Skloib has invented is, essentially, the Austin Powers bachelor pad of 2015, and I want it to be a reality. Soon, please.
