Using a hash property for security and caching

Douglas Crockford would like to see a hash= attribute to aid security and performance:
Any HTML tag that accepts a src= or href= attribute should also be allowed to take a hash= attribute. The value of a hash attribute would be the base 32 encoding of the SHA of the object that would be retrieved. This does a couple of useful things.
First, it gives us confidence that the file that we receive is the one that we asked for, that it was not […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

360 Video Marketplace Gets Exclusive, Original Content [Xbox 360]

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: 360 Video Marketplace Gets Exclusive, Original Content [Xbox 360]
Microsoft have just signed a deal with the Safran Company, whereby the Hollywood production team will put together a series of 10-minute original, scripted (ie not reality TV) programs for the 360’s video marketplace. Sure, Peter Safran himself has produced some shitty, shitty movies (Meet the Spartans, My Baby’s Daddy), but he’s got his own company now, so hopefully he won’t be the one personally involved. And hey, even if they do suck, Microsoft’s Scott Nocas has said it’s only “the first of many” such deals. So, what can we expect? The New York Times reports:
He said he planned initially to focus on genres, like comedy and horror, that appeal to the Xbox 360 audience, which is heavily concentrated from the ages of 14 to 34, and tends to be more male than female. The first shows are […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

Create a Post-SP1 Vista Install DVD with vLite [Step By Step]

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Create a Post-SP1 Vista Install DVD with vLite [Step By Step]
The Digital Inspiration blog has a timely step-by-step tutorial on creating a “slipstreamed” Vista installation DVD that has all the fixes and tweaks from Service Pack 1 included. The guide utilizes the previously mentioned vLite tool, and requires a Vista installation CD—but you create the new DVD from inside your existing Vista install, so don’t get too format-happy before reading through. For a similar method of creating an updated XP installation CD, check out RyanVM’s Update Pack.

Sending Too Many SMS Messages Means You Have a Mental Disorder [Weird News]

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Sending Too Many SMS Messages Means You Have a Mental Disorder [Weird News]
The same doctor that was pushing for internet addiction to be classified as an official mental disorder has now published an article in the latest American Journal of Psychiatry stating that sending a large amount of SMS messages will qualify as well. Not only that, it seems that Jerald Block is throwing in too much computer gaming in the mental disorder pile too. What do you and your BFF Jill think? Is too much SMSing something you need to get professional help to quit, as evidenced by the findings that “people who are denied access to the internet or mobile phones displayed feelings of anger, tension, and/or depression?” [Cellular News via Tech Dirt]

Nike+ SportBand Coming Next Week [Gadgets]

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Nike+ SportBand Coming Next Week [Gadgets]
We found this official teaser for the Nike+ SportBand on the Nike site, leading us to believe (you know, if Nike isn’t lying) that the kit is coming next week. It’s great for people who don’t really need iPods when running but still want the ability to track and display your progress. However, that means Nike could be leaning away from the iPod integration and getting more money in their own pockets instead of sharing with Apple. [Shiny Shiny]

40-Gigabit Granny Used World’s Fastest Connection to Dry Laundry [Internet]

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: 40-Gigabit Granny Used World’s Fastest Connection to Dry Laundry [Internet]
The most famous story to come out of Sweden in 2007—besides the death of celebrated cinema pioneer Ingmar Bergman, who I thought was already dead—was the 40-gigabit internet connection of the septuagenarian Sigbritt Löthberg. Giz reader speculation that she was going to “host her knitting circle as an HD interactive webconference” was close: in fact she used the hot-as-hell connection to dry her laundry.
Sigbritt’s son is internet-hardware wizard Peter Löthberg, who installed the system in his mom’s house to prove a modulation technique that allows data to flow between routers that are up to 2,000km apart without any data loss—or intermediary signal boosting or routing.
Sigbritt—whose weeks-long pr0n-n-WoW marathons are now long past—put it to other uses. Hafsteinn Jonsson, head of the fiber connections for the local network Karlstad Stadsnät, says:
She mostly used it to dry her laundry…It was […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

Irony: Boba Fett Cast In Carbonite (Well, Bronze) For the Wanton Pleasure of Others [Star Wars]

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Irony: Boba Fett Cast In Carbonite (Well, Bronze) For the Wanton Pleasure of Others [Star Wars]
An artist named Scott recently cast a Boba Fett PEZ dispenser in bronze using the lost-wax process, and ended up (I think accidentally) giving it a “battle scar” that would make George Lucas proud. It’s haunting, seeing that lifeless helmet stare out at the world, moving only when the cruel and greedy snap back its neck for a tasty treat. It may be a fate better than the Sarlacc pit, but it’s an irony that I’m sure would tickle Han Solo. [Geekologie]

The UK Declares War On Canadian Game Industry [Industry]

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: The UK Declares War On Canadian Game Industry [Industry]
We mentioned potential action to be taken by a European trade group against Canada for unfair trade practices, and now the UK Ministry of Canadian Ministry of Culture, Media and Sport has launched a formal investigation. The British government is afraid that Canadian “state aid offered to computer games companies … may not be compatible with World Trade Organization principles.” With a bevy of tax benefits (with some allowing companies to write off as much as 45% of labor costs), Canada has been luring big development studios away from Europe:
“The Canadians have driven a tank over the French Citroen and have now parked on our lawn,” Paul Jackson, head of the industry organization representing British games studios, complained to the Financial Times earlier this week. “It is becoming very challenging to keep core development studios here.”

Another Motorola Insider Points Fingers to Incompetent Execs [Meteorola]

Monday, March 31st, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Another Motorola Insider Points Fingers to Incompetent Execs [Meteorola]
Here’s a follow-up to Numair Faraz’s “Damn You All” letter to Meteorola’s Greg Brown, with the perspective of one of Moto’s ex-European Product Line Managers. Reading the alleged account of the whole Dilbertian mess is quite dramatic and sad:
I too used to work at Motorola and the incompetence of the execs was unbelievable. Ron Garriques had a “number 1 in 1000 days” strategy which resulted in selling volume at all costs. Employees knew over a 18 months ago that Moto was heading for a train crash.
Several European middle managers submitted plans to make profit rather than sell volume and all were dismissed by the US VPs including Ray Roman (since gone) who declared that there was still significant demand for the original RAZR and anyone who wanted to stop selling it (in favour of more profitable phones) didn’t know […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb
