Dynaudio releases active Focus 110 A speakers

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Speakers, Others

Anyone who’s ever heard good self-powered speakers next to an equivalent passive setup will attest to the advantages of the active approach. Sadly, market forces overwhelmingly favor the passive approach, except on the desktop, where “multimedia” speakers thrive. Dynaudio’s new active Focus 110 A speaker is attempting to take the company’s success with the MC 15 model off of the desktop and into the rest of the house. With dual 50-Watt amplifiers in each speaker (one for the tweeter and another for the mid/bass), these beasties certainly have the potential to sound a lot bigger than their size; and at $2,450 for a pair, they had better. Expensive, for sure (you didn’t expect Dynaudio to come in cheap, did you?), but you will save some money by not having to get an amplifier or receiver. Press release after the break.

U2 music video & concert collection hitting Comcast HD VOD

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Cable, New content

While we wait for someone to figure out how to squeeze the U2 3D experience down a coax wire, Comcast has gone ahead and put a few dozen of the band’s concerts and videos on video on-demand and in high definition. The new album doesn’t hit until next week but the video for the newest single Get On Your Boots is one of the available selections. Comcast claims users already watch 50-60 million music videos per month on VOD, and the prospect of pulling out an Irish flag and reliving the Vertigo tour’s Chicago stop one more time is probably enough for us to join them.

Curious ELPA remote sports built-in speaker

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Remotes

Well, here’s a novel concept. Rather than bothering with turning up the volume on your ancient television, just crank up the volume on this here remote. Asahi Electric’s block-shaped remote is about as unergonomic as it gets, and it sure won’t bring along any advanced functionality, but we suppose that’s sort of the point. The 30mm speaker connects to a wireless transceiver in order to blast out the audio, and while most everything else is lost in translation, do you really need to understand any more?

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending February 22th, 2009

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Blu-ray

The good news for Blu is that for the fourth week in a row it has seen an increase in revenue, the bad news is that after three weeks of single digit market share, it still isn’t anywhere near as good as it was at the end of last year. The reason of course is the slate of releases — isn’t it always — which have been anything but focused on the Blu-ray demographic. Now there has been some debate about what exactly the Blu-ray demographic is, but one thing is for sure, it isn’t kid movies. We witnessed this last week with Madagascar and now this week with the latest High School Musical. Just to put things into perspective, the Blu-ray version of High School Musical 3: Senior Year only managed 6 percent away from DVD, while Body of Lies managed 21 percent. Next week should be […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

As the plasma world continues to crumble, we’re stopping to ponder how this is affecting current, prospective and future customers. For any of you that were this close to pulling the trigger on a new plasma, has this week’s news shaken your confidence in the technology? Are you still planning to buy one? Might you buy an LCD or projector now? Feel free to elaborate on how the mass exodus from PDP has changed (or not) your perceptions.

Even the NBA’s Shawn Marion thinks Blu-ray Discs are too expensive

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Industry, Misc, Blu-ray

You think it’s tough pulling the trigger on a few new Blu-ray Discs each Tuesday on a “middle-class” budget? Try being a millionaire. In a recent interview with The National Post, when asked about transitioning his massive DVD collection to Blu-ray, the recently traded Shawn Marion of the NBA had this to say: “Hell, no! Blu-ray [Discs] cost too much. They cost like 35, 40 bucks apiece. I’m going to stick with the $19.99s. $14.99, $19.99, widescreen, I’m good.” He then followed that up with a quip that “high-definition” was “all that he needed,” further suggesting that an HD DVR and an upscaling DVD player was good enough for even the most wealthy among us. We know this guy isn’t representative of the masses, but seriously, you studios should take a listen.

ViewSonic intros 24-inch VTMS2431 multimedia HDTV

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Displays, Others, LCD

We’re not quite sure what makes this a “multimedia-capable LCD HDTV” more so than any other TV tuner-equipped LCD HDTV, but we’ll go with it for the sake of simplicity. ViewSonic has introduced a 24-inch LCD HDTV (native 1080p resolution) with a built-in ATSC / NTSC / QAM tuner, an internal “media player,” a USB port for loading up clips and an RS-232 control port for home automation gurus. Alongside that $449 panel, which is set to ship in Q2 of this year, the company also introducing its 42-inch ultrathin bezel CD4230 LCD at the Digital Signage Expo in Las Vegas, which features 500 nits of brightness, a 1,500:1 contrast ratio, RS-232 port, VGA / DVI sockets, support for VESA mounting and carry handles for easy transport. It’ll also land in Q2, but for $1,999.

Gennum’s Aviia enables 1080p surveillance over coax

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Cables, Other hardware, Others

These days, it’s just not enough to have a grainy, low quality loop of a crook robbing a convenience store. No one understands this better than Gennum, who has just introduced a new audio / video interface for professional and industrial applications (such as advanced video security and surveillance systems) that will enable 1080p transmissions over existing coaxial cables up to 100 meters long. The main selling point is this technology’s ability to work over existing coax infrastructures, giving CCTV networks the ability to capture and distribute content at high resolutions without upgrading to CAT5 or the like. Big Brother just found a way to keep a much, much clearer eye on you — better watch your steps, bub.
