Is right now the best time to buy a new HDTV?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Industry

A perfect storm of the slow economy and seasonal affect of new televisions coming in while old models still sit unsold is making right now the time to buy, according to the L.A. Times. It’s the answer to the question many of us are constantly asked “when can I get the best deal?” and there’s plenty of answers, Black Friday, Super Bowl, or right now during the slow period, but strictly on a dollar sense, from now through the next several months is generally easy picking for bargain hunters, with clearances driving prices low if you can manage to resist the pull of brand new models with their slick features sitting right next to the ones on sale. Any tips on where to look, or at least self control before we pass our own stimulus package?

Ion-based Acer Hornet nettop specs leak out: 1080p HDMI playback, Wii-like gaming, $299

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Media PCs

Well, well, what’s this? We just received a ton of informationrmation on that hot little Acer Hornet nettop we’d heard about a while back, and if this pile of documentation is as real as it looks, this thing could be the holy grail of cheap HTPCs — not only does it support 1080p video playback over HDMI, the “Media Center” version will indeed come with a Wii-like remote that can be used for gaming as well as media control. Specs look more than decent for the targeted $149-$299 price range: the low end model pairs what sounds like an Atom N230 with 1GB of RAM and an 80GB drive preloaded with Vista Home Basic, while higher end models get 2GB of RAM, a 160GB drive, and a “Boxshell” quickboot OS in addition to Vista Home Premium. All this plus super-quiet sub-26dB operation and a slick diamond-shaped chassis […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

Emulator runs Wii games in 720p while we wonder what might have been

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Other hardware

Using PCs to do what Nintendon’t, YouTube user renebarahona is running Wii games in HD resolutions through the Dolphin emulator. One peek at Super Smash Bros. Brawl in 720p is enough to make any of us wonder what a world where Nintendo didn’t hate HD (even yanking 480p capability from the Gamecube, we’re still not over that) would be like. These games aren’t merely upscaled like DVDs, they’re being rendered in a high resolution natively with extra anti-aliasing Xbox 360 BC-style, producing surprisingly crisp visuals. Check out the embedded videos after the break (remember to hit the HD button) for an example, including how to set this up on your own computer.

Microsoft, AT&T plug PlayReady / Silverlight DRM into U-verse without saying why

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Set-top boxes, Internet
Microsoft’s PlayReady DRM hasn’t exactly set the world on fire since first popping up over two years ago on a bevy of wireless carriers, so we were surprised by today’s news that it’s being integrated into the MediaRoom IPTV platform, specifically AT&T’s U-verse service. A Microsoft exec quoted saying “Through the power of software such as PlayReady and Mediaroom, AT&T will bring its customers an exciting new range of services and content” doesn’t help, since that power has lead to very little over the last two years with one exception. This is the same Windows Media Player 10 compatible DRM used by Silverlight plugins, like the ones for Netflix and Sky Player TV, so while we’ll make the leap of dreaming about Instant Watch coming to AT&T set-top boxes, reality is probably not only something entirely different, but also considerably more like the Xbox 360 IPTV […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

Xbox 360 TV Calibration app pops up on Community Games

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Misc, Displays, Other hardware

For most of this month, one of the top 10 ranked Community Games on Major Nelson’s list hasn’t been a game at all, the TV Calibration app is a 200 point ($2.50) tool loaded with plenty of test patterns to make sure your video setup is configured perfectly. There’s also a free trial, so we loaded it up and can say it does exactly what it says it does. Most games have at least some PQ optimization helpers, but it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get this detailed informationrmation about pixel mapping and test color patterns with a Gears of War disc, and hey, you gotta make sure those Netflix streams look their best. Other calibration tools may have a few more tests and work on more than one device, but for the price it seems to be a good value.
