HDGiants files BK, lays off everyone but the CEO and support staff

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Media PCs, Internet

We can’t say we didn’t see this one coming as the streaming and hard disk delivery service HDGiants has filed chapter 11 bankruptcy in Nevada this week and lays off everyone but the CEO Scott Bahneman and perhaps one technical support person. No word on what will happen to those Niveus owners who paid one to two thousand for a hard disk pre-loaded with HD movies in the past six months though. The company was working on expanding its services to all Media Center fans, but the economics just didn’t come together as investors refused to pony up for the next level.

The complicated economics of an all HD channel

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: HDNet, Cable, Fiber, Satellite
While you’re kicking back and enjoying some HD content on a lazy Sunday it is easy to give little regard to the economics that make that HD content possible. Most don’t care much about what makes the world go around, but if you’ve always wondered why there aren’t more all-HD channels, this recent post over at Multichannel news is worth the read. Most notable is the challenges all-HD networks face including the fact that Nielsen doesn’t even provide rating for them. If you’re a big Mark Cuban fan you might also find it interesting as a number of his quotes are included like when he says “We really think that as our distribution continues to grow, we can dominate the demographic (13-34 males).”

DuPont crafts ultra longevous OLED materials, which likely won’t be affordable

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Industry, Displays, Others, OLED

DuPont’s been dabbling in OLED advancement for years now, and while the world waits for the introduction of market-ready big-screen OLED HDTVs, engineers at the miracle-working company are toiling away to make sure those very sets last quite some time. For anyone following the OLED TV scene, you’ll know that luminance longevity has been a nagging issue, but if new developments pan out, stamina will be the least of our worries. In fact, the firm has crafted a green light-emitting material that can purportedly push onward for over a hundred years… continuously. Furthermore, the same scientists have engineered a new blue light-emitting material with a luminance half-life of 38,000 hours along with a red light-emitting material with a life of 62,000 hours. Unfortunately for the laypeople out there, we can’t imagine this stuff being even marginally affordable — but hey, it’s great news for the […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

ASUS to introduce O!Play media player at Computex

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Media streamers, Others

Wait, what’s this? ASUS diving head first into the HD media streamer game? Based on images and details acquired by Hardware, we’d say chances are looking pretty good. Reportedly, the aforementioned outfit will showcase its very own media player at Computex next week in Taiwan, and our expectations are already fairly lofty. The O!Play (codename HDP-R1) is said to be a fair bit quicker than competing models, and the file compatibility list is also worthy of laud. Port wise, this one’s packing eSATA, USB, HDMI, stereo audio jacks, optical digital audio, Ethernet and an AC port. If all goes well, we could see this little bugger in European stores by July, with a price tag pegged at €119 ($168). Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as if that price nets you an internal HDD, but we’ll find out for sure soon enough.

Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts on Blu-ray Disc

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: The fifth film in the new Dolittle franchise is upon us, in fabulous 1080p video with DTS-HD Master Audio sound. But all the A/V technology in the world will do little to improve your opinion of this clunker.

Air Force One on Blu-ray Disc

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: One of those rare thrillers that seems somewhat timeless, and just as relevant today as when it was made (is it really 12 years since this came out?). Wolfgang Petersen’s action packed wild ride on the President’s plane gets a nice visual and sound upgrade on Blu-ray, but the extras seem to have been left in the last century.

Poll: Do you actually want to watch TV via your game console?

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Polls, Other hardware, Set-top boxes

We’ve just about gotten our head around game consoles being HD video delivery boxes, whether its downloads from the Xbox Live Video (or should we call it Zune) Marketplace or PSN, or Blu-ray discs slipping into our IR receiver-less PlayStation 3, but is anyone really ready to make the jump to watching live HDTV through a console? That’s not necessarily possible yet even through the current PlayTV implementation in the UK or the yet to launch BSkyB / Xbox 360 tie-up, but one has to wonder if the desire for such products is out there, so we’re putting the question to you.

NEC upgrades DLP projectors for higher res 3D in time for the premiere of Up

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Others, DLP, Projector

If you roll out this weekend to check out Disney Pixar’s latest addition to the 3D film movement Up, you might be seeing it broadcast by one of NEC’s new NC2500S-A projectors or an older model that has been upgraded, sending out 3D in 2K res courtesy of Texas Instruments’ DLP chips. The kids might not notice a 33% improvement in resolution and brightness over previous generations that let it put the show on bigger screens than ever before, but we’re sure you will. Word is Clearview’s Ziegfeld Theatre is one of the first with the upgrade, so if you’re close by, we all know how important choosing a theater carefully can be these days.
