Sony unveils waterproof universal remotes for deep-sea TV addicts

Monday, August 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Remotes, Sony

If you’re very clumsy (or you love watching TV in the bathtub) Sony Japan has just the thing for you. The Rimotokomanda RM-PZ3SD universal remote comes in a palette of soothing colors, works with a wide variety of sets (including those by Panasonic / National, Toshiba, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Victor / JVC, Sanyo, Aiwa, Sharp, Funai / PRECIOUS, NEC, Fujitsu, Pioneer, Philips, and, of course, Sony), and offers at least a modicum of water-resistance for wet-handed TV viewing (we’ll leave that part up to your imagination). To be unleashed on the Japanese buying public “soon” for ¥2,468 (around $26). More pics after the break.

Surprisingly, cheaper Blu-ray movies make everyone happy

Monday, August 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Blu-ray
According to VideoBusiness, Rentrak reports show a 10% drop in pricing on new releases to $23.47 and 1/3 lower pricing on catalog titles to $17.23. Still, that’s apparently not low enough for some retailers, who hope to see high definition flicks priced just a few dollars above their DVD editions. Of course, while we’re more than willing to pay $25 for Jerry Maguire on Blu-ray (love Tom Cruise, even jumping on couches) we can see how that would be problematic for some consumers. Still, an NPD analyst is quoted saying “price is a moving target” as mainstream buyers enter the market, where do you think the magic number for Blu-ray acceptance is?

Blu-ray releases on September 1st 2009

Monday, August 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Blu-ray
Still no new blockbusters as we creep closer to the Fall, but plenty of very solid catalogs. The top of our list is easily one of our favorite movies of all times, Bravehart. The next one, Gladiator, that might be on the top of your list is a skip though — if you think it is a better movie than Braveheart, you’re crazy — because early reviews say it is one of the worst transfers ever and is actually barely a notch about DVD.

Braveheart (Paramount)
Gladiator (Paramount)
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - The Ninth Season (Paramount)
Bring It On: Fight To The Finish (Universal)
Heroes: Season 3 (Universal)
State Of Play (Universal)
Monster (First Look)
Sugar (Sony)
Supernatural: The Complete Fourth Season (Warner)
Earth (Disney)
High Crimes (Fox)
M*A*S*H (Fox)
The Girl Next Door (Fox)
Life After People (A&E)
The Crusades: Crescent & The Cross (A&E)

Researchers developing OLEDs as cheap as newspapers?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Displays, OLED

Sure, it’ll probably be a good while before you get your hands on an OLED TV, but don’t lose heart, young gadget-head! Techno-wizards at the RIKEN center in Japan have concoted a new way to fashion OLEDs that eschews the standard spin-coated films for something called electrospray-deposited polymer films, incorporating “a novel dual-solvent concept” that makes the ‘em “smoother than before, thereby enabling […] superior devices.” We’ll skip a few details that don’t mean anything to those of us who aren’t Advanced Materials subscribers (hit the read link for more information) and get to the good stuff: Yutaka Yamagata, the guy who developed this technique, says it will lead to displays “manufactured as inexpensively as printing newspapers.” Is that a promise, Yutaka? If so, we’re holding you to it.

OLED HDTV Update: LG 15″ This Fall

Monday, August 31st, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Now please don’t get excited. There is little news in today’s entry except to confirm what I’ve been saying all along; OLED HDTVs remain off in the future. And the Sony OLED TV that is already on the market does not count because it is not HD, though its astronomical price alone would probably disqualify it.
So over the weekend news broke that LG announced plans to start shipping an OLED HDTV in November. Let’s look deeper. If it’s the same display as it demonstrated at CES last January (and there’s no reason to expect it to be different), it will have a Wide XGA resolution: 1366 by 768 pixels. That is enough pixels to show a 720p HD image, so it qualifies as an HDTV. However, keep in mind that this size display has an optimal viewing distance of just two feet. If you want to get one of these […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

Goldmund enters universal Blu-ray player space in typically gaudy fashion

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Blu-ray, Players
You knew it was only a matter of time before Goldmund jumped in on the Blu-ray bandwagon, and the result as just as ridiculous as you’d expect. The new Eidos Reference Blue — yes, it’s spelled with an “e” — is a universal Blu-ray playback system that puts heavy (literally) emphasis on damping down all vibrations. Didn’t you know that much like the needle on the old Edison cylinders you’re still clinging to, those digital bits just hate to be shaken around? Well, the 180-pound Eidos Reference Blue will put a stop to that nonsense. High end decks from from mere mortal companies have nothing on this player that must have been woven by especially dexterous unicorn hooves — it’s so exclusive that the 50 produced units will only be offered to Goldmund subscribers; if you haven’t heard of said club, you won’t […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

NFL to let Cowboys giant HD scoreboard stay as-is, at least for 2009

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Filed under: Misc
The NFL has ruled on the Dallas Cowboys punt blocking super-sized videoboard deciding to leave it where it is, 90 feet above the playing field, at least for this season. That’s no surprise to us, on the last EHD Podcast we figured no one would be able to tell Jerry Jones there’s a problem with his billion dollar baby, obstructed view seating and all. So far there’s just the one strike in the books, but if it happens again, it is a dead ball and the clock and down will both be reset. Haven’t seen the punt heard round the world yet? Check after the break for a clip of the kick that caused all the commotion, though we’re still waiting for a ruling on whether or not Gears of War tournaments on the thing are still legal.
