Big Screen EPG by remote isn’t the Webguide replacement we’ve waited for

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it:
For those not familiar with the tragedy, Microsoft hired Doug Berrett a few years back and he was the developer of one of the greatest 3rd party plugins for Vista Media Center. His WebGuide would not only let you do something that even the crapiest of DVRs can do today, remotely schedule recordings, but it would also let you watch your recorded shows over the internet. Well with Windows 7 came a new Media Center EPG database which broke WebGuide and while Microsoft built show streaming right into Windows 7, the void for the rest has never been filled. Recently we’ve seen two new add-ins that try to fill in the gap with the latest being Big Screen EPG “by remote.” But we’re sorry to say that the wait isn’t over. The problem with Big Screen EPG isn’t that it is a pay app, but that it is using Microsoft’s […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

LG’s 15-inch 15EL9500 OLED TV sets sail for Europe, scheduled to arrive this May

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it:
We’ve had only tantalizingly brief (or is it briefly tantalizing?) chances to see LG’s glorious OLED television, but each and every time it’s left us with the feeling that our lives are poorer for not having one in our homes. Sure, that says as much about our tech addiction as it does about the 3mm-thick displays, but at least the deep-pocketed among us won’t have to wait too much longer to sate the need for 10,000,000:1 contrast ratios and 0.001ms response times. LG has announced it’ll be bringing it’s 15-inch OLED panel to Europe this May (to be swiftly followed by summer availability in the US) with a hefty MSRP sticker of €1,999 ($2,725) for the Austrian market. Nobody ever said the cutting edge was gonna be a cheap place to live.

Broadcasters may have to pay extra for the right to deliver Mobile DTV

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it:

As a geek who just wants to enjoy gadgets, it can be very hard to understand the complicated spider web of media rights — it’s easily the kind of thing that puts one into an outrage when things like Hulu being pulled from Boxee happen. The problem is of course money, but this one is just too crazy, so we’ll spell it out for you. Lets say a broadcaster pays NBC for the exclusive right to broadcast the network’s signal in the Los Angeles area. Now obviously the exclusivity means that the broadcaster is the only one who can deliver that content in that area. Well evidently just because they paid for the right to broadcast the signal to HDTVs and cable customers, doesn’t necessarily mean they own the rights to broadcast that signal to mobile portable device. Yeah, that’s right, networks want broadcasters to pay extra for that. The […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

Sony’s 3D-ready Blu-ray players released into the retail wilderness

Friday, February 26th, 2010

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it:
Sony’s latest Blu-ray players have been shipping online for a while but now they’ve invaded retail, spotted by our friends at FormatWarCentral on the shelf at a local Best Buy. A quick check on the website shows the BDP-S470 and BDP-S570 available at most, if not all, area stores so they shouldn’t be hard to find. We know they’re ready to give a Full HD 3D experience, and have speed to burn, but a few readers have already complained that the DLNA access mentioned in the specs isn’t available yet, pending a future firmware update. If you just can’t wait to get 3D ready (or just get a PlayStation 3) then this would be your chance.

At this point it doesn’t look like Managed copy will ever get here

Friday, February 26th, 2010

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it:
Oh Managed Copy, the feature that made such a big stink so early on in the Format War still can’t seem to become a reality. It was bad enough that it took until the very last version of the AACS to even be defined. Now here we are six months later and although last month all the studios have signed the new AACS license, Managed Copy doesn’t seem any closer. It doesn’t matter that all the discs being shipped today support it, because evidently the license servers aren’t anywhere near being operational. In fact the only thing that has seemed to have happened in the last six months — other than discs shipping today that support it – is that we caught a demo of it from Pioneer in September at CEDIA and Cyberlink was telling people at CES that PowerDVD will support it this year. Don’t get us wrong, […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb
