Rate Songs from the Status Menu with Funes [Featured Mac Download]

Friday, April 11th, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Rate Songs from the Status Menu with Funes [Featured Mac Download]
Mac OS X only: Funes is a one-purpose app for OS X that just might inspire you to start rating songs and getting creative with smart playlists. That’s because it puts a drop-down menu in a Mac’s status area that displays the song title and offers those familiar ratings stars to click on. If you’re not rating songs through Quicksilver, you probably have to do it (and don’t do it) by bringing up the main iTunes window and clicking through to rate the song, and Funes is the low-key (and low-memory) way around that bother. Funes is a free download for Mac OS X only. Screenshot via Fousa.be

Anti Keylogger Shield Keeps Your Passwords Safe [Featured Windows Download]

Friday, April 11th, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Anti Keylogger Shield Keeps Your Passwords Safe [Featured Windows Download]
Windows only: Freeware application Anti Keylogger Shield blocks keyloggers from tracking the passwords and other personal informationrmation you type on your computer. Unlike other similar tools, Anti Keylogger Shield does not detect existing keylogger software; it just disables the mechanisms they use to record your typing. While I can’t vouch for this app across the board, I did install one keylogger and it worked as advertised—I typed, but the log remained empty. This would be a real winner if it were portable and could run from thumb drives. (For portable protection, check out previously mentioned SafeKeys.) Thanks Jason!

Hard Boiled Eggs in a Bag … If You Dare [Wtf]

Friday, April 11th, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Hard Boiled Eggs in a Bag … If You Dare [Wtf]
Don’t have 12 minutes and/or the ability to boil water? Someone has gone and done the impossible work of hard-boiling eggs—and sticking them in a bag—for you. Sure, they cost 400% more than regular eggs, come in a recession dozen (9 or 10 to a bag), and were given a glowing review of tasting “stale, rubbery, and hard”, but hey, it’s a time-saver. I found it on Craigslist — an F-14 and night vision goggles

Friday, April 11th, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: I found it on Craigslist — an F-14 and night vision goggles It would appear that you really can buy anything on Craigslist and eBay — even military gear that should never be resold. The Government Accounting Office has proven that much to be true, purchasing items like F-14 parts and body armor online.

The following email was sent out to Microsoft MVPs (read: friendly people :), but we should give them our honest feedback too:
Microsoft has recently released a public beta of IE8. Standards and security are of top importance in this release. To that end, the IE team is planning on releasing IE8 in full standards mode. Releasing in Full Standards Mode offers many benefits in the long term, but short term, could cause some end-user and developer issues. We would love to understand your thoughts around […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

Android Beta Running on AT&T Tilt [Cellphones]

Friday, April 11th, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Android Beta Running on AT&T Tilt [Cellphones]
The Windows Mobile hackers over at XDA forums seem to have gotten Android working on an AT&T Tilt (HTC TyTN II), meaning that eventually you might be able to get an Android phone working without actually buying a particularly “Android” phone. The stability is pretty nonexistent, but you can see that it actually works insofar as you can load it up on top of Windows Mobile and do stuff with it. Entirely replacing the phone with Android’s ROM is another story, but if anyone can do it, the nerdlingers on XDA can. [XDA Developers via WM Experts via Boy Genius]

Commit a Habit to Paper to Break It [Motivation]

Friday, April 11th, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Commit a Habit to Paper to Break It [Motivation]
The Zen Habits weblog faces down the long, hard road we all take to break a habit, whether bad or just unproductive, and pulls out 13 reasons why they remain unbroken. Key among the counter-programming tools we have available are motivation, blogger Leo Babauta says, but one tip in particular helps keep your habit-breaking in league with projects and goals:
You have to write down your goal. Write a start date. Write an end date (30 days is a good time frame). Write down exactly what you’re going to do. Write down how you’re going to be accountable, what your rewards are, what the obstacles are, what your triggers are. More on these below. Main thing: put it on paper and stick to the plan (don’t file the plan in your inbox, you piler you!

Keeping that paper in front of […] Hope you Enjoyed this HDTV informationrmation Blurb

Following discussions at the Highland Fling conference with the audience and Gareth Rushgrove (whose excellent presentation on API design we featured here already) I sat down and came up with a wishlist for a great Ajax API.
As an example I used the Google translation API, pointed out its good points and explained what I’d love to see added to it. Specifically any JavaScript Ajax API to me should have the following:

Have a good documentation with immediate copy and paste examples backed up by a full class documentation

Lair Wises Up, Gets Analogue Controls [Lair]

Friday, April 11th, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Lair Wises Up, Gets Analogue Controls [Lair]
Poor Lair. Looked gorgeous, but, yeah. You know. Controls. Sucky. Well, the rumour that was so good it turned up twice in February has been confirmed by Sony, with a Lair patch due in Japan on April 17 adding the option of analogue controls for the much-maligned shooter. I know what you’re going to say next. “Who gives a rat’s arse? It’s too late”. And sure, on one hand, you may be right. On the other, though…this might bump the game from a C to a B- on your ratings scale. Which would mean picking it up on the cheap (and pretty soon, it’s gonna be cheap) wouldn’t be the stupidest thing you did this year. Analog Controls Coming to Lair [IGN]

Can Domino or GroupWise still compete with Exchange?

Friday, April 11th, 2008

This is one of my top posts ive read today! Read about it: Can Domino or GroupWise still compete with Exchange? Today’s Classic Tip comes from TechRepublic’s 4/11/2000 edition of the Lotus Notes TechMail, which we no longer produce. It got me to wondering - of all of the great battles in the 80’s and 90’s, you don’t hear about Exchange vs. Lotus Notes anymore. Does it still matter?
