Judd Apatow’s look at the big 4-0 is a little long, but also funny and very familiar.

Saturday, February 23rd, 2013KDDI Remote TV delivers Blu-ray DVR video to PCs and smartphones
Tuesday, February 19th, 2013Sure, it’s possible to get remote access to home theater devices through raw methods like a Slingbox, but KDDI has a slightly more elegant solution for those living in Japan. Its tiny Remote TV box puts a Blu-ray DVR on the local WiFi network to both schedule recordings while away and stream the video itself. Locals can watch from a Mac, Windows PC or Android device, although they’ll be limited to 480p when they’re outside of the home. iOS support is coming soon, the carrier says. KDDI ships the device on February 23rd for an estimated ¥19,800 (3) and is keen to note that it doesn’t require a subscription — it sees Remote TV more as an incentive to splurge on smartphone data, which just might work for commuters wanting to catch up on their shows.

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013Jurassic Park 3D Blu-ray comes home April 23rd after its one-week theatrical return
Sunday, January 27th, 2013We’ve known since last year that Jurassic Park would make its return to theaters in 3D this April, but now Universal has also dropped the details about its Blu-ray 3D release, as well as the 2D release of all the flicks individually in March. Just to fill in the timeline: first Jurassic Park 1, 2 and 3 will hit Blu-ray/DVD individually (following the triple pack that shipped in 2011) on March 26th, then Jurassic Park in 3D arrives April 5th in regular and IMAX theaters (no, the now-dated CGI has not been redone, you can get a peek in the trailer embedded after the break) followed finally by the Blu-ray 3D April 26th.
While news that the flick is back on the big screen is exciting, we can’t help but think there’s a few missed opportunities here like the previously mentioned CGI, and lack of any extras detailing the conversion process on the disc. Still, some had complaints about the picture quality of the previous release and it’s possible that remastering done in the name of 3D could see a better version this time around for all viewers. Either way, after Titanic, I, Robot and even Top Gun seeing 3D re-release it appears this is definitely a trend. The individual movies are priced at .49 on Amazon, and the 3D combo pack is .99.

Monday, December 31st, 2012LG’s 2013 AV lineup puts NFC into Blu-ray player, 9.1-channel home theater
Sunday, December 30th, 2012LG is in the midst of a whirlwind tour of its 2013 CES introductions, and the next stop is its AV catalog. The running theme this year is NFC: both the BH9430PW 9.1-channel home theater and the BP730 Blu-ray player include the short-range wireless format to simplify mirroring content from your Optimus G (and, most likely, other NFC phones). The surround system also packs an iPod dock and a Private Audio Mode that funnels sound to a nearby smartphone when a quiet house is paramount. Beyond these two devices, LG promises the Bluetooth-equipped, 310W NB4530A sound bar, a ND8630 speaker dock with both Android and iOS support (including AirPlay and Bluetooth) and an NP6630 portable speaker that stuffs AirPlay, Bluetooth and NFC into its frame. We’ll know more at CES next month, but those who want LG’s overview can see it for themselves after the break.

Thursday, December 6th, 2012If you’re a Star Trek: The Next Generation fan who bypassed seasons one and two waiting for the pivotal third season to arrive on Blu-ray, you can finally get a taste of the experience in high definition. While you’re enjoying memories of the Borg, season-ending cliffhangers and all the other highlights of season three with this new trailer, you can also check out an updated version of the PADD app that’s out on iPhone and iPad. Originally launched in 2011 to bring home a database of Star Trek info in true TNG form, version 2.0 brings an additional 170 entries, Siri-powered voice search, messages from Starfleet, a smaller size and the ability to live update content in the future. Check after the break for the trailer and beyond the source link for the apps (still .99 on iPad / .99 on iPhone.)

Thursday, October 11th, 2012Prometheus Blu-ray specs unveiled, arrives with seven hours of extras October 9th (video)
Saturday, September 29th, 2012While Ridley Scott’s latest flick is already available on just about every downloadable movie store you could name, Prometheus is still a few weeks away from making its debut on disc and now Fox has officially released all the details. The extras listed in an earlier leak appear to be accurate, with a Second Screen iPad app that promises access to character Peter Weyland’s archives, while much of the 15 minutes or so of deleted and alternative scenes have already been posted on the internet (search around if you absolutely must know what else there is and can’t wait / don’t want to spend the cash). Arriving October 9th, there’s a four disc set with both a Blu-ray 3D edition and bonus extras disc with featurettes for a total of seven hours of bonus materials, while the two disc set trims it to just one Blu-ray and DVD / digital copy. The two disc set is currently selling for .99 on Amazon, while the four disc edition bumps the price another . A trailer with a peek at some of those extras and the full list of details awaits after the break, but an explanation for why anyone would ever try to touch some weird space snake is something you’ll have to find on your own.

Saturday, September 22nd, 2012Oppo continues its legacy with two new top end Blu-ray players
Thursday, September 20th, 2012Regarded as the best of the best when it comes to disc players, Oppo has two new ones that can easily handle any disc you’ve got. Physical media isn’t the only game in town, obviously, so in addition to Netflix, Vudu and local file support like MKV, Oppo has stepped it up even further by adding an HDMI port in front for use as an MHL input. This allows you to leverage the high-end Oppo’s processing to do wonders on content stored on your portable or other MHL source. Speaking of video processing, both the new guys use Marvell’s Qdeo video processor and are capable of doing both 2D-to-3D conversion as well as up-scaling to 4K. From a control perspective, a back-lit remote is included, but there’s also an IR input, RS-232 and mobile phone apps. The BDP-103 will surely satisfy any videophile at 9 this October, but if you happen to be an audiophile too, then you’d probably want to wait until the BDP-105 is released later this year. Not only does it feature two ESS Sabre32 Reference DACs and a Toroidal linear power supply, but there are also dedicated stereo outputs with both RCA and XLR balanced connections and a headphone amplifier — if you know what all that is, we’re sure you really want it.

Friday, September 14th, 2012Marvel Cinematic Universe 10-disc Blu-ray set delayed, that sweet Tesseract case is to blame
Friday, September 7th, 2012Remember that 9 Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled Blu-ray boxed set and its S.H.I.E.L.D. case (pictured above, video after the break) with the sweet glowing Tesseract cube? Good – now forget it, at least until spring 2013. Blu-ray.com has an official statement from Disney that sadly informs us it will not make its predicted September 25th ship date, and has been pushed back. The statement does go on however, noting that buyers will receive a new briefcase with even more (unspecified — may we suggest Tony Stark’s Iron Man briefcase?) special features. It doesn’t go into precisely why all this happened, but an earlier report from TheHDRoom noted a legal squbble between Marvel and Rimowa, the company that apparently created the metallic briefcase it was based on, and subsequently sued Marvel and Disney’s home video arm, Buena Vista Home Entertainment for trademark infringement and the like. Whatever the cause, the set is on ice for now — we’ll let you know when it’s safe to preorder again.

Friday, August 17th, 2012Avatar Blu-ray 3D Collectors Edition finally comes to retail in October (video)
Tuesday, August 14th, 2012Despite being one of the most widely viewed 3D movies, and the highest grossing film of all time, viewers still have not been able to buy Avatar on Blu-ray 3D by itself (without paying high prices to resellers) due to an exclusive pack-in deal with Panasonic, but that will change this fall. Fox just announced the Avatar Blu-ray 3D Collector’s Edition will debut globally October 15th, and release in North America October 16th. There’s no word on any extra special features, as producer Jon Landau indicates in the press release (included after the break) it will contain the theatrical cut of the flick inside special packaging. Originally, the delay in releasing the movie widely on disc in 3D was blamed on a lack of 3DTVs in homes. We’ll see if the prospect of watching the .7 billion juggernaut “the way it was meant to be seen” according to director James Cameron, nudges more buyers towards a new display this fall. Check below for a video clip of Cameron sharing the news to the movie’s fans on Facebook, plus an extra treat that didn’t make it into the movie.

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012FiOS TV app for Samsung HDTVs and Blu-ray players available with 26 live channels (video)
Monday, August 6th, 2012While we saw cable and IPTV providers promising pay-TV channels without a box (at least in that room) at CES 2012 we were skeptical, since we’ve been burned before, but now Verizon FiOS TV has followed up the launch of its app on Xbox 360 by quietly releasing the version for Samsung’s Smart TVs and Blu-ray players. Like the Xbox 360 app of course, you will need to already be a Verizon FiOS TV customer, so if it’s not in your area you’re still out of luck. One of our readers noticed the app pop up on his 2011 model Samsung HDTV, and Verizon just posted a quick video trailer (embedded after the break) previewing the app’s ability to tune into 26 live channels, as well as FlexView video on-demand content. Tipster ProphetBeal noted the channel changes seemed quicker than on the Xbox 360 app, although they were otherwise very similar. There’s a few more screens awaiting you at the source link, as well as a list of compatible devices.
[Thanks, ProphetBeal]

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012Prometheus Blu-ray extras leak reveals Second Screen app and 15 minutes of deleted scenes
Saturday, July 7th, 2012While Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is still in theaters, it’s been available for preorder on Blu-ray 3D since before the flick debuted, and now Amazon France has exposed the full list of extras on the way. The bad news, pointed out by Movies.com and Prometheus Forum, is that those anticipating a classic Ridley Scott Director’s Cut to fill in plot holes appear to be in for a disappointment — while there are 15 minutes of extended / cut scenes, there’s no indication that you’ll be able to watch the movie with them reinserted. There are a lot of other extras, including a director’s commentary, extensive making-of featurettes, many of the short viral videos that were posted previously and production materials, along with a Second Screen iPad app. The specific set listed includes the other Alien flicks, but since we’re sure you’ve already snagged the Anthology with its MU-TH-UR interactive mode you’ll probably be looking for a more limited release. The release date for the set remains October 9th, hit the source link for the listing or check out the full list of features and a trailer after the break.

Sony Blu-ray Player for $40
Friday, July 6th, 2012Blu-ray has taken a long time to catch up with DVD, and as I continue to point out, the disc business appears to be in decline. Is if possible tht Blu-ray could catch up this late in the race?
It could if the premium between it and standard DVD players (which is “good enough” for the majority of consumers) dropped to something approaching “zero.” And apparently now it has.
A seller on eBay is offering refurbished Sony Blu-ray players for . I have not tested this model, so I can’t tell you if it’s any good or not, but it appears that the seller has sold many hundreds of them. And it’s no “transportation special” stripped-down model, either. It has Sony Bravia Internet video support and a wired Ethernet connection, a front panel USB port, and an HDMI connector. According to the product description, it was “originally purchased from a major retail store and returned.”
New Blu-ray players still cost more than DVD players, but with deals like this showing up, I’d expect the price differential to soon become meaningless.

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012DVD and Blu-Ray: Exit Slowly, Stage Left
Thursday, May 31st, 2012There was a time when DVDs enjoyed the fastest new technology adoption of all time. The transition from the clumsy, snowy VHS tapes to the sleek little polycarbonate discs was driven by the fact that the digital image looked terrific even on standard definition picture tube televisions. And they look even better on flat panel HDTVs; many people still think that they’re watching high-definition content when they watch a DVD on an HDTV.
But the cycles of rise and fall continue, and it looks as though the days of getting movies on plastic DVD and Blu-ray discs are numbered. My friend and colleague Peter Putman wrote a recent column that cites some sobering statistics. Physical disc rentals dropped 25% in the first half of 2012 compared with the first half of 2011. Kiosk rentals were up by 30%, but brick and mortar rentals fell 40% and subscription rentals fell 48%. (Now do you see why Netflix has been trying to get out of the business?) By comparison, streaming video subscriptions rose 545%. (I repeat; do you see why Netflix wants to get out of renting discs?)
Now, I know that there are few options that give you a way to stream high-quality HD content at this point, so all you afficianados do not need to write and tell me about how Blu-ray is way better than streamed video. We’re talking here about the mass market, and many consumers are perfectly happy with DVD quality on their televisions, so most streamed content falls into the “good enough” category. And I also believe that there will be more and more true HD content available to stream over the Internet as the subscriber base increases. (We’re also going to see new compression standards that should help keep the bandwidth requirements down for the higher resolutions.)
The take-away here is that DVD and Blu-ray discs are on the down side of the curve, and I don’t see anything on the horizon that might change that trend.

Monday, May 28th, 2012E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Blu-ray trailer and box art pop up online (video)
Saturday, May 26th, 2012Ever since Universal announced during CES 2012 that it would deliver many of its classic films on Blu-ray this year as part of a centennial celebration, we’ve been keeping a careful eye out for news regarding Steven Spielberg’s classic E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. While we still don’t know the release date, price or if it will contain the changes made in the 2002 edition of the flick, Universal posted a trailer for the Blu-ray (embedded after the break, note that at 0:25 seconds the FBI agents are holding guns, so it appears to be the original) that confirmed a digital remastering from the 35MM film, 7.1 surround sound and “hours of bonus features”. Additionally, forum posters on Blu-ray.com have noticed this (probably not final) box art appearing on Amazon UK recently. After waiting for word since a new distribution deal brought the flick back to Universal in 2008, a few months of silence hasn’t broken us, but hopefully more details appear soon. The best guess still sees the 30th Anniversary release hitting store shelves in time for the holidays (likely after Jaws, which is scheduled for release August 14th), when we can relive our childhoods in proper 1080p HD at last.

The occasion is the studio’s release of The Grey, starring Liam Neeson, on Blu-ray this coming Tuesday May 15th. If you’re the lucky winner, however, you won’t even have to venture out to stores to pick up a copy of your own — one will come included with the TV! Unfortunately, there’s one additional restriction this time around: only US residents are able to enter. But if you qualify, head below and leave a comment, and good luck!

Saturday, May 12th, 2012Total Recall ‘Mind-Bending’ Blu-ray remembers a better looking video transfer July 31st
Friday, May 11th, 2012After a disappointing initial go-round on Blu-ray back in ’06 due to poor picture quality (which was improved upon slightly in a later Studiocanal release overseas), the 1990 version of Total Recall is coming back to the US with a “Mind-Bending Blu-ray Edition this summer. Timed to hit shelves along with the remake that’s arriving in theaters, Blu-ray.com mentions this one promises a video transfer process supervised by original director Paul Verhoeven. There will even apparently be brand new extras including an interview with Verhoeven and featurette comparing the restoration process from the original film negative, although the Governator himself Arnold Schwarzenegger appears to be absent. The new version should run .99 when it arrives July 31st, assuming you’re not already camped out for the Colin Farrell / Kate Beckinsale / Jessica Biel flick which opens up August 3rd. Theatrical trailers for both versions follow after the break.

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012Martin Scorsese’s ‘Hugo’ Blu-ray 3D set for release February 28th — 3D haters beware
Saturday, February 4th, 2012Considering that Hugo was a flick capable of earning 4 out of 4 stars from noted 3D hater Roger Ebert, it will be interesting to see how it’s received upon its home release February 28th. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards and currently rocking a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the fantasy tale of a boy who crosses paths with legendary filmmaker Georges Méliès in 1930s Paris may be the best example yet of how an artist can make use of the effect. The two hour six minute flick will be available in Blu-ray 3D combo pack, and 2D Blu-ray editions, with a 7.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack and special featurettes on the making of the film and the real magician/director who inspired the story.
The release date is two days after the Academy Awards, and if this flick can snag Best Picture or Best Director it could become a turning point for 3D. New 3D movies are already on deck from other high-profile directors like Ridley Scott (Alien prequel Prometheus) and Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby), while big budget conversions like Star Wars — coming to theaters next week — and already-sold-out-for-Valentines Day Titanic test the waters for older movies. Add in sports broadcasts planned including UFC 143 tonight and the London Olympics in the summer, and 2012 is shaping up to be an especially rough year for 3D haters — you have our deepest sympathies. Those on the other side of the fence can check after the break for a press release with more details and (2D) theatrical trailer.

Monday, January 30th, 2012Monty Python and the Holy Grail comes to Blu-ray March 6th, brings an iPad app
Tuesday, January 24th, 2012Even in 2012 there are a number of classic films that have yet to be released on Blu-ray, but we can knock one off that list March 6th when Monty Python and the Holy Grail comes home from Sony Pictures. Beyond being remastered in HD and featuring a 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack, the release will also bring exclusive Lost Animations, extended scenes and outtakes features running for over 30 minutes. iPad owners will also be able to snag a companion Second Screen app called The Holy Book of Days that includes special background content from each of the 28 days of the movie’s filming. It will cost .99 on its own, but for a “limited time” there’s a rebate available for those who purchase both disc and app. The disc comes with an Ultraviolet Digital Copy and has an MSRP of .99, but Amazon’s preorder pricing is already down to .99. Check out the full list of extras in details in the press release after the break, and if you’re not already familiar with the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow (African or European) we’ve included the old DVD trailer from a few years ago as well.

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011Transformers Blu-ray 3D comes home January 31st in Ultimate and Collector’s editions
Tuesday, December 27th, 2011After a quickie Blu-ray dropped in the fall sans-extras, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is getting a full fledged release January 31st complete with 3D and four hours of bonus features. There’s actually two versions coming, first up is the .99 four disc Ultimate Edition with a 2D copy on one disc, a Blu-ray full of extras, a Blu-ray 3D copy, and a DVD with the film in standard def plus iTunes / Windows Media Player compatible digital copies. Even though it’s coming with that old school digital copy disc, this flick will also be Ultraviolet ready, so if you’re packing the correct assortment of logins and software it can be downloaded or streamed on other devices. The other release is a seven-disc Limited Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Trilogy set that dedicates two discs each to the first two movies, and three for DotM as well as a signed plaque from the director. We may have to wait to see Martin Scorsese’s Hugo to see a Blu-ray 3D release to watch a good movie on the format, but the extensive work done in creating Transformer’s visual effects should definitely hold over AV junkies until Avatar gets a wide release. Check out the press release with a full list of extras and a picture of the LCE after the break.

Monday, October 3rd, 2011Star Trek: The Next Generation is coming to Blu-ray, starting in 2012 (video)
Thursday, September 29th, 2011It’s official, Star Trek: The Next Generation will follow the lead of the original series and be released in remastered HD form next year. The official site reveals 2012 will actually see two TNG releases on Blu-ray in honor of its 25th anniversary. A single disc preview package consisting of the pilot Encounter at Farpoint, and episodes Sins of the Father and The Inner Light called The Next Level arrives first in January with a .99 MSRP, followed by season one later in the year and subsequent seasons after that. All 178 episodes will get the treatment, converted to 1080p with 7.1 DTS Master Audio sound. This is being done by returning to the original film negatives and then recreating the special effects instead of converting them from videotape. Can’t wait until then? Check after the break for a (very) quick teaser trailer, or watch the eps in SD one more time on Amazon or Netflix.

Friday, September 16th, 2011Transformers: Dark of the Moon Blu-ray due September 30th, 3D version later
Sunday, September 11th, 2011Besides being a lightning rod for the Blu-ray vs. HD DVD wars, the Transformers series also racked up some of the biggest HD sales ever, and now we’ll see if the latest entry, Dark of the Moon, keeps up that trend. Paramount has announced it will be released September 30th in Blu-ray/DVD combo form for .99, with a “deluxe” release including Blu-ray 3D expected in “the coming months.” There’s no specifics on any extras included in this release, but it looks like PHE is going the Avatar route and saving those for later. For those anticipating the 3D release, hopefully this doesn’t equal a similar exclusivity period, but until the disc is actually announced we won’t assume anything. If 154 minutes of Michael Bay exploding things sounds like a good idea to you, check after the break for a press release and schedule that Friday off — you have somewhere to be.

Sunday, September 4th, 2011Netgear announces Universal Push2TV HD, dual-band WiFi adapter for Blu-ray players and TVs
Wednesday, August 31st, 2011
Not due for a laptop upgrade anytime soon? For those of you carrying on without Intel Wireless Display, Netgear just trotted out a so-called universal version of its Push2TV HD adapter that brings wireless media streaming to the masses. Like the WiDi-compatible version already on the market, it mirrors your Windows desktop on a TV or monitor, streaming DVDs, 1080p movies, photos, YouTube videos and other content. As with the WiDi model, the setup consists of a small box that connects to your TV via HDMI, though because the intended customer presumably lacks Wireless Display, it also comes with a thumb drive-sized USB adapter. Look for it in the US and Europe in late September for 9.99 — a good thirty bucks more than what you’d pay for that WiDi model. Meanwhile, Netgear also announced an dual-band, USB-powered WiFi adapter meant for TVs and Blu-ray players. Full PR for both products after the break.

Monday, August 1st, 2011Fast 5 Blu-ray arrives October 4 with Second Screen feature in tow (video)
Thursday, July 28th, 2011Fast 5 may have dropped “Furious” from the title but we saw it in theaters and can confirm things are just as angry as ever with director Justin Lin at the helm once again, and throwing The Rock into the mix with stars Paul Walker and Vin Diesel. Plot descriptions between fast cars, explosions and Brazil are wholly unnecessary for this flick, although the reason we’re highlighting it is because of a bevy of Blu-ray exclusive extras. Beyond the usual set of featurettes and behind the scenes look, Universal is making this the first flick to work with the Second Screen feature of its pocket BLU app, now updated for tablets. We’ll have to wait and see if it lives up to previous efforts by Disney or if the flick is just dragging it around like a vault through city streets, but there’s a trailer for the feature included after the break if you’re interested.

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011Hands-on with the Star Wars Blu-ray: Early Access iOS app
Tuesday, July 19th, 2011We know, we know. You’re fit to be tied waiting for the complete Star Wars collection to be released on Blu-ray in September, but there’s good news for impatient iPad owners here in the US. You see, some of the collection’s bonus materials can be had for free a bit early — as in tomorrow — courtesy of the Star Wars Blu-ray: Early Access App. Even better, we’ve got video of the app in action plus a gallery of pics for you to drool over until you can download it yourself. And for folks abroad or those with an iPhone or iPod touch, the same sneak peek will be available in August.
The app itself is a ported version of what you’ll see on the Blu-ray discs, but there’s some added touchscreen functionality — pinch-to-zoom on the concept art and users can spin props and models with the flick of a finger in the “Collection” section. The app also lets you selectively download the content, so all that artwork and video won’t eat up an undue portion of your iPad’s memory. After getting handsy with it in person, we found the app easy to use and the content compelling (where else can you examine the Death Star up close?), but we were left wishing that there was a bit… more. Of course, the lion’s share of extras are reserved for the paying customers come September 16th — though we were disappointed to discover that, currently, there are no plans to make it all available on the app even if you buy the Blu-rays. Regardless, you get what you pay for, and that makes this gratis addition to the Star Wars universe a darn good deal.

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011Pirates of the Caribbean Blu-ray combo arrives October 18th in two, five or 15 disc sets
Saturday, July 16th, 2011Three years after the first three movies were released on Blu-ray as a combo, the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, On Stranger Tides, is ready to come home. Expect it in multiple forms, from a simple two disc combo with the movie on Blu-ray and DVD to a five disc pack that throws in a Blu-ray 3D edition and another Blu-ray full of extras, and finally the big daddy 15-disc Pirate’s Chest Limited Collectors Edition (pictured above) that contains all four movies, a never before seen short film and more. All Blu-ray editions include a Disney Second Screen tie-in like the one seen on Bambi and Tron: Legacy, if you’re wondering what else is in store check after the break for the press release with all the details, and one of the bonus clips.

Report: 3.5 million 3D Blu-ray discs ‘sold’ in first year, half were bundled with hardware
Friday, July 15th, 2011
If we’re looking at sales figures of 3.5 million units in the first year for a new laptop, smartphone, or camera, then we might be impressed. But 3D Blu-ray discs? When half were included in the box with a Blu-ray player? Man, that’s gotta sting. Those numbers are based on an IHS Screen Digest estimate, tallying US sales beginning in June of 2010 and ending last month, though many larger titles didn’t make their debut until later in the year. Still, if those results are even in the ballpark of official (unreleased) numbers from BD distributors, then things really aren’t looking up for 3D. With fewer than 100 titles even available on Blu-ray, however, we’re not really surprised that discs aren’t exactly flying off the shelves. Obviously, as a growing number of movies are filmed in 3D we’ll see BD title availability increase as well, but with the technology’s lackluster beginnings over the last year and no sign that consumers are ready to spend more to embrace that new dimension, 3D may continue its slow crawl toward the mainstream for some time to come.

Thursday, June 16th, 2011Netflic Helps Blu-ray Make Gains
Tuesday, June 14th, 2011From the “How’s That Again?” Department: The market research firm NPD Group has released information from recent studies that indicates Blu-ray technology is starting to take hold and make up some of the ground lost by DVD sales. The company found that nearly half of all Sony PlayStation3 users watched at least one Blu-ray movie a month on their game consoles, and that 15% of U.S. consumers report using a Blu-ray player in the past six months, which is up from 9% last year.
Some of the factors that are cited by the growing interest in Blu-ray are better prices for both the discs and the players. Now that you can get a Blu-ray player for under 0, the absolute price difference between that and a DVD player does not appear to be as important to consumers. And disc prices have come down to about where DVD prices used to be, which helps. You can even rent Blu-ray discs now at your local Redbox kiosk for just .50 a night.
But perhaps the most surprising comment from NPD was this: “Digital services have also driven increased interest in Blu-ray players. In fact 50 percent of consumers who intend to buy Blu-ray set-top players in the next six months cited the desire to use available subscription video download services as a primary reason.” In other words, half of the people who are considering a Blu-ray player want to watch streaming Netflix on it. As I’ve been saying, that’s an easy way to add network connectivity to your existing HDTV and get Blu-ray support in the bargain.
When you look at it that way, it makes sense that Netflix can help sell Blu-ray players, but it’s still a bit strange.

Amazon VOD and web videos are apparently also on deck, but judging from the comments, owners of certain model TVs are still waiting for updates to flick on their USB connectivity, Hulu Plus, and other apps. Sunday, May 15th, 2011Blu-ray Gets IP Clearinghouse
Saturday, May 14th, 2011Do you have an idea about how to make an insanely great Blu-ray player, or maybe something new that includes a Blu-ray player, such as an an ultimate mult-media bicycle? Before you go into production, make sure that you have all the necessary rights to build it. This means getting licenses for all the various patented parts that go into a Blu-ray player. This can include pieces such as the blue laser, the circuitry that controls the laser, and the software that decodes the data stored on the disc.
Until recently, you’d have to go to all the patent-holders individually and negotiate terms for the use of their intellectual property (IP). This task is now a lot easier. According to a press release from CyberLink this week, the company is working with Hitachi, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung and Sony to create a one-stop clearing house for “patents essential to Blu-ray Disc products.” This new company is named One-Blue, LLC. According to the companie’s Web site, the license for all the patents needed for a BD player costs , and for a BD recorder the fee is . The site also lists the license fees for DB drives and discs, as well as related software.
This convenience is certainly helpful for manufacturers, but consider these costs with some back-of-the-envelope calculations. There are many BD players available now for under 0. Let’s assume that the wholesale price is 50% of the street price, which leaves for the manufacturer (assuming that there isn’t a distributor in the middle). If the manufacturer pays for the licenses, that leaves for all the parts, the manufacturing process, and all the overhead which includes the design work and the marketing. And if they’re lucky, there may be a few dollars left over for profit. As a result, it’s easy to see why some manufacturers may choose to build unlicensed products; when 18% of your revenues go just to licensing fees, there’s a strong incentive to cut that corner. That’s something to keep in mind when you’re scouring the Web for the lowest price on a Blu-ray player. My advice is to pay a little extra for a name brand model, as you’re likely to get better performance and features than you’d find in a bargain basement model.

Saturday, May 7th, 2011Been missing your dose of Kenny Powers in high definition? Don’t worry, the wait is almost over since HBO is bringing both seasons of Eastbound & Down out on Blu-ray August 2nd. According to the press release, the season one DVD was HBO’s best selling comedy SKU last year, which probably helped push it for a Blu-ray edition this time around. Special features include a typical lineup of behind the scenes featurettes, blooper reels, commentaries and deleted scenes, should you find either season worthy of their .98 MSRP.

Thursday, April 7th, 2011Befitting its storyline, the home release of Tron: Legacy this week checks all the tech related boxes: 7.1 surround sound support, iPad / PC Second Screen app, 3D. Even the making of the movie featured new technology, from the 3D cameras to the self-illuminating outfits worn by the actors. Of course, there’s more to a good home movie experience than just specs, so we gave Tron: Legacy (and the original Tron, included as a part of this five-disc special edition) a viewing or two to see if all of that effort in the presentation — not to mention in the movie itself — added up to a must-have disc.

Monday, April 4th, 2011Crackle starts streaming all of its free movies to Roku, PS3, Sony TVs and Blu-ray players
Wednesday, March 30th, 2011Sony’s Crackle has had a more successful life so far than its previous iteration as Grouper, streaming movies, TV shows and shorts to various devices since launching back in ’07 and announced today its full library will be streaming to the PS3, Roku boxes, Sony Blu-ray players and Bravia TVs. Expanding full access from just the Google TV (there’s also an Android app that currently streams some of the items) it’s taking credit as the only provider offering free full length flicks including Ghostbusters, Bad Boys, A Few Good Men and more for free on these platforms. The drawbacks are video that tops out at 480p standard definition and Hulu-style commercial interruptions but if you absolutely must watch Weekend at Bernies II without spending any money it is an option — at least, as long as the PS3 browser doesn’t crash with an out of memory error like it did for us. It did work better on more capable platforms, so check out the full details in the press release after the break.

Home Media fans have been waiting a long time to finally see last year’s Academy Award winning titles and the first big one we’re looking forward to post-award show is finally here; The Fighter. On the other end of the spectrum, but still gives us good memories of a Summer wasted watching the same movie over and over again on HBO, is BMX Bandits. Another that might be worth a look is one we haven’t heard of until just now, but with Matt Daemon in front of the camera and Clint Eastwood behind it, Hereafter should be worthy of two hours of your free time.

It might be post-Oscar season, when most are anticipating Academy Award winning titles on Blu-ray, like Inside Job, but we can’t make the best documentary winner our pick of the week when Jackass 3 is on the list. Sure it is just plain silly and absolutely ridiculous, but what can we say, we enjoy a good laugh. We do want to watch Inside Job, but it isn’t even our documentary of the week, as we love football more than we like to learn about the greatest economic crisis of our time — besides, after you’ve seen Frontline’s Inside the Meltdown, how much more can there be to know?

The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Blu-ray discs are up for preorder on Amazon
Monday, March 7th, 2011It’s taken a couple of years but the release of the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Blu-ray discs is finally drawing near, and now the set is available for preorder on Amazon. According to TheHDRoom, it doesn’t reveal any of the extra footage on the EEs, but if you’ve been waiting all this time for the proper discs we figure a quick taste of what’s to come can’t hurt.

We’ve been looking forward to the first HD release of Disney’s classic Bambi and its Second Screen app for some time, but after watching the Academy Awards presentation we’ve pushed something else to the top of our list. 127 Hours didn’t actually win any awards on Sunday night, but it was nominated enough to make us take notice and add it to our queue — not at the top though. We’ve been writing this post just about every week for the past four or so years and never have we seen so many titles, with so little we’d like to watch. There are a few classics worth mentioning and although we aren’t trying to say this is a classic, we do remember John Candy and his Uncle Buck fondly. Sure, it isn’t Planes Trains and Automobiles, but it isn’t Canadian Bacon either. We are hoping we’re missing something though, and will be paying close attention to the comments where we expect you to tell us exactly what that is.

While we do continue to wait for those that did get nominated, there are some classic you might’ve been waiting for like A Beautiful Mind or one of our fav’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Analog sunset begins, all the new Blu-ray players will only output HD via HDMI
Tuesday, January 11th, 2011The chicken littles have been worried about this since long before the first Blu-ray (or even HD DVD) title was ever released, and the first step towards the analog sunset has officially come. Any new Blu-ray player announced after January 1st 2011 will only output HD via HDMI — players that started shipping last year can still be sold until the end of this year though. If you just love component video, you might figure you’ll be able to get a player today and continue to enjoy it for years to come, but maybe not. You see the studios also have the Image Constraint Token (ICT) which when set on a title will tell every and all Blu-ray players to down convert analog output to 540p. The only reprieve is that if its set on a title, it must be marked on the box, and of course it can’t be retroactively set (any title you own now will continue to play exactly the same way it does on your existing players). We’re waiting for final confirmation, but apparently the ICT hasn’t been an option to studios until now so start looking for the icon on your latest purchases. The final stage in the sunset is 2013 when analog outputs will be removed from Blu-ray players completely, but we suspect we’ll have better things to worry about by then like ultra HD or digital distribution.

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010Kaleidescape launches 100-disc Blu-ray movie server
Monday, December 13th, 2010Kaleidescape has fulfilled its promise of launching the industry’s first Blu-ray server by releasing its new 100-disc Blu-ray disc vault we saw at CEDIA that, when paired with its M300 or M500 players, can rip, store, and stream copies of Blu-ray movies throughout the home. However, despite its pricetag of ,495 (plus ,500+ for the player) there’s still some serious restrictions — each disc vault has to be connected to an individual player, and the discs have to remain in the vault for the player to stream their ripped copies over the network. Sony’s 400 disc changer can store more movies, but this should load them faster and offer easy browsing with cover art and title info. We suppose this is the “simplest” ripping solution available for now, but a year and a half later we’re still wondering if Blu-ray’s Managed Copy feature will ever launch and make a legitimate movie jukebox option a reality.

So far, promotional exclusives have tied up many Blu-ray 3D titles, but that tide may start to turn, now that Universal has announced it’s releasing the previously Panasonic-exclusive Coraline to retail on January 4, 2011. The only extras noted on the 3D disc itself are a commentary track with the director and composer and English DTS-HD MA soundtrack. We’re sure fans of the animated flick will be happy to put away those red/blue glasses and get a better quality version, we’ll be keeping an eye out to see which title is released from the bonds of exclusivity next.

We’re not sure what is up with there being yet another highly rated animated feature but there is. Don’t get us wrong, we enjoy watching movies like How to Train Your Dragon as much as the next, but no way any animated film could deserve an IMDB score of 8.3, there’s just no way. We do hate to tell you that the 3D version is yet another one that’s tied to hardware so unless you want to pick up two pairs of Samsung 3D glasses, you’re out of luck on that one for now.

24 Million Blu-ray Players
Saturday, October 9th, 2010The market-tracking firm Futuresource is bullish on Blu-ray. The company forecasts that 24 million players will be sold in 2010, just in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. And this does not include the Sony PlayStation 3 (which includes a Blu-ray player). The company predicts that 11 million of these units — nearly half of the total — will be sold in the fourth quarter alone. They predict an 80% growth in unit sales over last year.
Certainly the falling prices for Blu-ray players are helping fuel the growth in sales. The players still cost many times as much as an equivalent-quality DVD player, but in terms of absolute dollars, the difference is shrinking to 0 or 0 in many cases, which is a small enough differential that many consumers can accept. Also, the recovering economy shows signs that some consumers feel comfortable about spending again, which could translate into stronger holiday sales figures than last year.
While online sources of streaming movie and television content are certainly making an impact on the sales and rental of optical discs, these sources do not yet have broad support for high definition versions of the content. At the moment, the Blu-ray discs remain one of the best options for getting the best viewing experience for HD content.
The future for Blu-ray is a little cloudier, but it is possible that its ability to handle 3D content may extend its life and help sales to continue to grow. There are still a lot of people out there who are perfectly satisfied with their standard definition DVDs when viewed on an HDTV, however, which may put an upper limit on just how far Blu-ray can expand in the market.

Monday, October 4th, 2010
Seems like a long time ago many were wondering if Blu-ray would ever take off and now the latest report from the NPD Group shows that almost one in five households have a player. Sure, many of these are PS3s, but despite what some might be thinking right now, these Blu-ray households rent and buy more packaged media than the other 83 percent. And these young, wealthy families with kids aren’t digital streaming haters either, in fact a fourth of them have rented a streaming video in the past 30 days, which is 10 percent higher than those laggards with standard def disc players. So while Blu-ray has failed to keep the home media market flat, it has enjoyed growth in this terrible economy and returned profits to its proponents.

The 52-inch LC-52LB3 and 46-inch LC-46LB3 are the latest members of the AQUOS Quattron 3D family, and aside from packing 1080p panels and integrated TV tuners, you’ll also get a slot-loading Blu-ray drive that plays back BD films and can toast material on BDXL media. Not too shabby, eh? They’ll be on sale halfway across the world this November, but pricing remains a mystery — we’re guessing it’s one of those ‘if you have to ask…’ type scenarios.

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010PS3 firmware 3.50 is a go, 3D Blu-ray movies suddenly feel more wanted
Tuesday, September 21st, 2010Right on schedule — or a day early, depending on your time zone — Sony has unleashed version 3.50 of its PS3 firmware. And as previously promised, it’s got 3D Blu-ray movie playback with it. According to the Official US PlayStation blog, there’s also some added Facebook integration and new methods of grief reporting. We’re still updating and will let you know what else we might unearth.
Update: Surprise, surprise, it works. We were able to test Blu-ray 3D out and got it running without too much hassle, as long as the HDMI setting is on “Auto” it will detect your 3DTV and switch to the correct mode just like it has for gaming since the update that enabled 3D functionality there. We didn’t see any differences in the menus with the Disney Blu-ray 3D demo disc we had on hand, but we’ll be checking out how BD-Java functions in 3D later on.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Sunday, August 8th, 2010
More flesh has been added to Toshiba’s plans to bring out a Blu-ray player – it is likely to be called the BD-18 and could be available as soon as the year end.
The company, which backed the HD DVD high-definition format that eventually lost to Sony’s prevailing Blu-ray, had stubbornly maintained it would not bring out a Blu-ray player and instead focused on its XDE DVD-upscaling technology.

Kick-Ass Blu-ray Review
Wednesday, August 4th, 2010Blu-ray releases on August 3rd 2010
Wednesday, August 4th, 2010
If you’ve been reading this weekly post regularly and thinking, “man when is a new kick-ass movie or all of my favorite MGM classics going to be on Blu-ray?” then this is your week. Kick-ass isn’t exactly the type of movie that would draw us to the theater, but any title that hits Blu-ray with an IMDB score of 8.2 warrants our time and attention. But that isn’t the only thing this week as MGM has six classics and Universal has the 80′s famous The Breakfast Club as well as the 4th season of Heroes — which we wouldn’t watch again if you paid us. There is obviously more to talk about that we’re missing but one last one we’ll mention is Sony’s The Prophet, which we’ve never heard of, but we always enjoy a good crime drama, especially with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%, wow.

Love it or hate it the top title this week is the modern remake of Clash of the Titans. And if you are worried about more fake 3D, don’t, this Blu-ray Discs has lots of features, but one of them isn’t 3D. Marantz adds Blu-ray 3D, internet streaming features across 2010 Blu-ray player, audio line
Saturday, July 24th, 2010Marantz has unveiled its 2010 line of high end receivers, amplifiers, pre amplifiers and Blu-ray players, and naturally the headlining upgrades have to do with streaming internet video access, Blu-ray 3D and HDMI 1.4 compatibility. You can check out the press releases for all the details, but we’ll highlight the UD7005 (9, due in September) and UD5005 (9, August) “Universal Media Players,” which earn the tag by including everything SACD, DVD-Audio, DivX and even Blu-ray 3D playback, plus improving on their predecessors by featuring DLNA v1.5 streaming access and built in Netflix and YouTube compatibility. One disappointment however, while some are still waiting for an updated version of the flagship SR8002 receiver, with only new editions in the form of the SR5005, SR6005 and SR7005 receivers. The SR7005 features six HDMI 1.4a inputs, with Windows 7-compatible DLNA, iPod, IP control, Pandora and the other usual feature boxes checked when it ships next month for ,599.

Thursday, July 8th, 2010Movie lovers connected to Blockbuster from the days when renting involved begging mom for a ride to the store can take heart knowing the company is still expanding its On Demand service. Specifically the company has added two Philips Blu-ray players, the 5320 and 7320 (both of which scored Netflix back in January), to its short list of supported streaming hardware. Will this move turn the tide for the ailing company whose streaming claim to fame involves offering new releases on the same day as their Blu-ray and DVD release? Probably not, but at least it does show the brand isn’t ceding the platform fight to Netflix and the recently announced Hulu Plus just yet. Read the press release after the jump.

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010Blu-ray Coming to Redbox
Sunday, June 6th, 2010At a conference yesterday, Redbox president Mitch Lowe announced that the company will start renting Blu-ray titles from its kiosks for .50 a night, according to a report published in Home Media Magazine. The discs should start appearing in the next few months, though it the Redbox site already has Blu-ray titles listed as being available. More than one out of every six Redbox customers already owns a Blu-ray player, and the company is already renting about 40 million movies a month, so it could be in a good position to help grow the demand for Blu-ray titles and players.
A 50% premimum sounds like a lot to pay for Blu-ray, but it’s only $.50 so it may be that the absolute amount is more significant than the percentage in this case. According to the article, Lowe cited some interesting statistics. He said that 20% of Redbox customers would not have bought or rented a certain DVD if it were not available at Redbox. He also cited number for how many Redbox customers go on to buy a movie after they have rented it. As a result, he believes that his service actually helps Hollywood sell movies.

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010The world no longer has to wait, two of Toshiba’s second generation Blu-ray players are now on sale. The 3D capable BDX3000 is still waiting in the wings, but these should provide some competition for LG’s Blu-ray boxes for now. The MSRP on the BDX2500 has dropped to 9, while the BDX2700 is still 9, which should make them a more compelling option than last year’s initial BDX2000 effort.
