Distro Issue 62 arrives with Apple's iPod duo, a superslim PS3 and Wacom's latest pen display

At its event in San Francisco a few weeks back, Apple had more up its sleeve than just an aluminum-clad smartphone. In the latest issue of our weekly, we put both the new iPod nano and iPod touch through their paces to find out how they fare against their elder siblings. If a duo of PMP reviews doesn’t snag your attention, we also throw down the review gauntlet on Wacom’s Cintiq 24HD touch and this year’s slimmed-down PlayStation 3. Eyes-On peeks at an ultrathin ultrabook, Weekly Stat examines emoticon use and Time Machines tallies up some more gadget history. The week’s end is mere hours away and the usual download links that follow can help you settle in for a bit of leisurely gadget reading.

Cablevision’s Optimum app hits 2.0, brings cable TV streaming to iPhone, iPod Touch

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Cablevision took a major step into the future back in April when it opened up its full channel lineup for viewing on the tablet with Optimum for iPad, and now it’s bringing that experience to other iOS devices. The new app, simply called Optimum, runs alongside the original and works on iPhones or iPod Touches, bringing the same controversial ability to stream live TV or play back video on-demand — provided the viewer is still at home. That tether to your service address takes most of the shine off of viewing on mobile devices, but we won’t argue too much about adding extra screens for no additional charge. The iPhone app launches at versino 2.0, sharing features with the newly updated iPad app including the ability to work as a remote control for the cable box and schedule DVR recordings remotely. Hit the source link below to grab either app from iTunes or check out the press release after the break.

Comcast brings Xfinity TV VOD to iPhone, iPod Touch, but only on WiFi

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Comcast rolled out a v1.5 update today for the iPhone / iPod Touch versions of its Xfinity TV app which allows them to access the video on-demand streaming that has been available on the iPad since February. Just like the iPad however, they’ll only work over WiFi — no streaming over 3G or downloading for offline viewing here, although unlike Cablevision and Time Warner’s iPad apps, you don’t have to be on your own WiFi for it to work. The slate of content has expanded to include 25 networks and over 6,000 hours of video, so for those confusing times when you’re within reach of WiFi but can’t get close to a TV, you can still queue up something for viewing. The official Twitter account advises a delete / reinstall for those having issues since upgrading, if you’re a Comcast subscriber who hasn’t already snagged the free app for its channel changing and remote DVR scheduling capabilities, you can do so at the link below.

[Thanks, Nick & Colby]

Google TV Remote app now available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

After debuting it on the Android platform in December, the Google TV team has finally released a version of the official remote app for iOS. The interface and features appear to be the same with one key difference, currently the iOS version doesn’t support sharing web pages from mobile to the screen, but everything else like voice search is here and accounted for. It’s good for the team to finally get the long promised app out, but more interesting now is the question of which features will be included in the second generation of Google TV hardware once manufacturers like Vizio, Toshiba and Samsung join the mix, hopefully putting the two handed/keyboard kludginess of the past behind us. Check after the break for the YouTube demo, or just grab the free app via the QR code on the official blog or iTunes.

Onkyo’s CS-V645 and CS-445 mini stereos offer iPod dock, a pinch of retro

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

Onkyo’s got a knack for dishing out new kit with a semblance of yesteryear in the design, and we’ve got to say — we dig it. The company’s latest are designed for minuscule offices, studio apartments and your everyday bedroom, with the CS-V645 DVD / CD mini system leading the way. This guy’s got an iPod / iPhone docking station on the top, a USB port on the front, built-in FM radio tuner and support for MP3, WMA, JPEG, and DivX file formats. It’ll also upscale content to 1080p over the HDMI output, and in case you were worried about getting up each time to alter the station, a remote is bundled in for good measure. The CD-only CS-445 is practically identical save for its incompatibility with DVD and the removal of its USB socket, but as with its older brother, it boasts a 40-watt amplifier and a pair of two-way loudspeakers. The CS-V645 is expected to crash in early December for 9, while the CS-445 reaches retailers this month for 9.

Savant stuffs iPod touch into multifunctional Touch Remote, includes VoIP and FaceTime promises

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

That’s no render we’re looking at, Savant assures us, it’s the most recent photograph of the company’s Touch Remote prototype. This crazy do-it-all peripheral comes with an embedded fourth-gen iPod touch — no word on whether you’ll be able to remove it, though it looks unlikely — and mirrors the abilities of Savant’s iPad home control and automation app. That means that once you get your lights, climate control, network cameras, and home cinema hooked up to Savant’s control hub, you’ll have yourself a neatly streamlined remote to save you doing anything yourself again. Or so goes the theory, anyhow. Savant augments the offering with promises of VoIP and FaceTime integration by the time the Touch Remote ships to retailers in the first quarter of next year. MSRP is set at 9, which may or may not be feasible given that the iPod touch by itself costs at least 9. We shall see. For now, you can see the prototype device on video after the break.
